Recycled Student Housing
“And for good measure, we couldn’t help but include this incredibly fun dorm at the University of Twente. Designed by Arons and Gelauff, the 9-story building features a rock climbing wall on the exterior. No word on safety precautions, but we’re willing to bet there are other options if you lose your room key.”

Midway
These photographs of albatross chicks were made just a few weeks ago on Midway Atoll, a tiny stretch of sand and coral near the middle of the North Pacific. The nesting babies are fed bellies-full of plastic by their parents, who soar out over the vast polluted ocean collecting what looks to them like food to bring back to their young. On this diet of human trash, every year tens of thousands of albatross chicks die on Midway from starvation, toxicity, and choking. To document this phenomenon as faithfully as possible, not a single piece of plastic in any of these photographs was moved, placed, manipulated, arranged, or altered in any way. These images depict the actual stomach contents of baby birds in one of the world’s most remote marine sanctuaries, more than 2000 miles from the nearest continent. ~cj, October 2009

“A traditional red phone box has been recycled into one of the country’s smallest lending libraries - stocking 100 books.
Villagers from Westbury-sub-Mendip in Somerset can use the library around the clock, selecting books, DVDs and CDs.
Users simply stock it with a book they have read, swapping it for one they have not.”
(Fantastic concept! Full article here.)

Biodegradable dishes made from plants: “Disposable Leafware products are made from naturally shed leaves. Fallen leaves are collected, pressure washed, scrubbed, sun dried, compressed and then sterilized to produce an eco-friendly 100 % biodegradable & compostable dinnerware.”

People are just getting so crafty =)

Plastic Bottles, 2007. Depicts two million plastic beverage bottles, the number of bottles used in the United States every five minutes.
Today, I got to see a few of Chris Jordan’s Running the Numbers photography displayed at my college’s Art Gallery. His work is simply amazing, view more here.

BigBelly Solar Compactors
Each BigBelly is a bin and compactor in one. By compacting trash on the street, the 32-gallon BigBelly can hold 150 to 200 gallons of trash. The BigBellys are powered by solar panels—they’re entirely off the grid—and send text messages to the city when they’re full, so collection trips are only made when they need to be, instead of requiring a daily drive.

This is not the best idea…yet. This would not work until people actually recycle and compost or else tons of recyclables and compostables would be wasted by people who just toss them in the trash with everything else.
